As possible to that of its earliest proponents Each verse is accompanied by concise lively exposition by the authors conveying the explanations of the Indian commentators The result is a translation that balances the demands for fidelity and accessibility. The translators do an excellent job of presenting the Mulamadhyamakakarika in what could be close to its original context Eschewing their own 21st century commentary the translators instead summarize and present explanations of the verses from ancient Indian commentators I very much enjoyed this approach especially because the translators could have easily doubled or tripled the length of this text to include all sorts of comparative philosophical argumentation I believe they did the right thing by letting Nagarjuna s philosophical confrontation with the Abhidharma schools speak for itself That being said I couldn t help but notice numerous possible connections between Nagarjuna s critiue of metaphysics that have parallels in modern Western philosophy in Kant and Hegel for example I m very much interested in those connections as well Beyond all that I found Nagarjuna s critiues of Abhidharma metaphysics very stimulating I had only read a few Buddhist texts and a few

A really good translation of Nagarjuna's Mulamadhyamakakarika probably his most important work on Buddhist metaphysics Nagarjuna extended the idea of 'Shunyata' or 'Emptiness' of the Buddha to demonstrate that ultimately everything is 'empty' of an intrinsic self or essence including emptiness itself and this in

This is an exceptional edition of a brilliant work of philosophy Nāgārjuna’s style is extremely dense and cryptic so Siderits and Katsura include a running commentary of every verse of his poem which they base on the four surviving ancient commentaries of the work Their translation is rigorous consistent and fluent They explain all the complexities and subtleties of the argument clearly and concisely Best of all they manage to put N
